Why It Matters

Health happens far beyond the clinic

Health is shaped by the conditions in which people live, learn, work, and play. Healthy People 2030 groups these social determinants of health into five domains. Our work helps organizations address them through partnerships, education, and programs that connect people to care.

The five domains of the social determinants of health: economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context

The Five Domains*

  • Economic stability: steady income and employment that let people meet their health needs.
  • Education access and quality: strong schools and learning opportunities from early childhood through higher education.
  • Health care access and quality: coverage, access to primary and preventive care, and the health literacy to use it.
  • Neighborhood and built environment: safe housing, transportation, clean air and water, and healthy places to live and be active.
  • Social and community context: supportive relationships, civic engagement, and freedom from discrimination and violence.
